Cypripedium calceolus var. pubescens

A native North American orchid, this is one of the easier species to grow in garden conditions. Plants form a low clump of light green leaves, bearing pouched, canary-yellow flowers in late spring, held on upright stems. One of our most charming native plants, and seldom seen in gardens. Plants prefer a slightly acidic soil, and are happiest in bright woodland conditions. Dislikes being moved, so plant where it will remain undisturbed. May be divided every 4 to 5 years, in early fall. Plants often go dormant after blooming, so mark the spot well to prevent disturbing.
