Gentiana makinoi ‘Blue Magic’

Upright Autumn Gentian

USDA Zone: 5-9

Plant number: 1.225.030

Autumn Gentian are a very special group of plants, highly treasured for their rich display of flowers in summer and fall. Plants are low-growing, with fresh green foliage forming a creeping mound, bearing large upfacing trumpet flowers for many weeks. This selection is a recent introduction from the Netherlands and is different from most other Autumn Gentian. Although parentage is unknown, it is suspected G. makinoi ‘Marsha’ and an unamed G. scabra are likely. It is compact, clump forming with a narrowly upright habit and blooms early to midsummer. It has narrow leaves, bearing light blue flowers. Gentians grow best in rich, acidic soils, preferring climates with cool summers. Excellent edging plants for the border, in the rock garden or alpine trough. USPP#20704: unlicensed propagation prohibited.
