Often described as being “stately” when in bloom, Foxgloves produce enormous spires of large, dangling bells. This selection is a compact variety which forms a low rosette of glossy green leaves in the first year, bursting into flower during the second summer. The flowers are very large, strawberry-rose in colour with darker markings on the inside. Vigorous. Usually lives 2 to 4 years, more of a perennial in habit than the Common Foxglove selections. Any seedlings that appear can be easily moved in their first season, while still small. At flowering time, plants may need to be staked. ‘Summer King’ is a naturally occurring cross between the yellow flowering Digitalis grandiflora and the lavender-rose flowering Digitalis purpurea. CAUTION: Toxic if eaten.
