Native to the Pacific Northwest, this is a spreading evergreen groundcover, useful as a lawn substitute or for stabilizing slopes. The green leaves have an attractive glossy sheen. Small white flowers in spring are followed by tiny red edible berries. Plants produce runners that spread and root. Mow or trim plants hard in early spring. Somewhat drought tolerant. Not a good choice for planting in the perennial border, since runners will spread in every direction and invade other nearby plants. Attractive spilling out from containers. Tolerates moderate foot traffic.
