Helleborus foetidus

Stinking Hellebore

USDA Zone: 5-9

Plant number: 1.256.200

Highly valued in milder regions, for their winter effect in the garden. This species forms a clump of deeply cut leathery green foliage, bearing upright sprays of nodding, cup shaped greenish flowers, each edged with reddish purple. The whole plant has a slightly skunky smell when in bloom. Flowers appear in late winter and very early spring. Performs best in regions with a mild maritime climate. Gardeners in colder climates would be wise to mulch around the base of the clump with leaves in very late fall. Fairly tolerant of dry shade conditions. CAUTION: Harmful if eaten/Skin irritant.
