Also called Blue Grama, this is an important native plant of the Great Plains shortgrass prairie. It makes a low tuft of olive-green leaves, with unusual spikes of bristly flowers that are held at an angle, somewhat resembling a swarm of flying insects. Attractive in the sunny border or rock garden, best viewed up close to appreciate the airy effect. Flowers may be cut and used for arrangements. Clumps may be easily divided in early spring. Self-sown seedlings may also appear. Very drought tolerant once established.
