Onoclea sensibilis
Sensitive Fern |
USDA Zone: 2-9 |
Plant number: 9.045.900
Native to Eastern North America, this is a spreading fern that will form a colony in a suitable moist to wet site. Sensitive Fern gets its name from the fact that it will go dormant during summer drought or at the first signs of frost in the fall. Broad leaflets on the taller sterile fronds have a nearly tropical appearance. Shorter, brownish fertile fronds appear at the base of the plant in mid summer. Combines well with larger forms of Hosta and other vigorous shade-loving plants. Will tolerate full sun in a constantly moist to wet site. Small plants are easily moved in spring. Possibly toxic if eaten.
