| A really remarkable plant for the woodland garden, this close cousin to our native Jack-in-the-pulpit is originally from Japan. In mid-spring it pops out of the ground, bearing two large divided leaves, and unusual hooded flowers boldly striped with white and purple. The entire plant vanishes by mid summer, going to rest until the following spring. Choose a site with morning sun/afternoon shade or bright all-day shade. Prefers a moisture-retentive soil but needs good drainage. Best to allow plants to remain in place without disturbing, if possible. Seeds may be harvested to start new plants, but be sure to wear gloves when rubbing off the pulpy flesh as it may cause a bad skin rash. Sow immediately indoors and hold seedlings over the winter. CAUTION: Harmful if eaten/skin and eye irritant.
