PerennialHeritage Perennial Profile

Here's the complete description for this Heritage Perennial. Drop in any time to see the rest of our collection.

 Plant Number: 1.128.050USDA Zone: 4 - 9
Centranthus ruber
Common name :  Red Valerian
Also known as Jupiter's Beard, this is an old-fashioned cut flower being seen once again in sunny perennial borders. Plants form an upright, bushy mound of light green leaves, bearing rounded heads of fragrant, rosy-red flowers over many weeks. Excellent for cutting. Removing faded flowers will encourage plants to form buds all summer long. Good choice for hot, dry sites, this will even thrive in rock walls or between paving stones. A short-lived perennial, but usually self-seeds where happy. If grown in rich soil, Red Valerian may need to be staked. Attractive to butterflies.

What others say about this plant...
Red valerian's loose, open form and tendency to self-sow make it a better choice for cottage-type gardens than formal plantings. Plant the red variety with softer-colored, equally aggressive companions, such as 'White Swan' Coneflower, yarrows or pale cultivars of golden marguerite (Anthemis tinctoria)…; Larry Hodgson, Perennials for Every Purpose
