Here's the complete description for this Heritage Perennial. Drop in any time to see the rest of our collection.

 Plant Number: 1.205.100USDA Zone: 2 - 9
Eryngium amethystinum
Common name :  Sea Holly
Amethyst Sea Holly features open umbels of prickly steel-blue flowers, which are a favourite for cutting, fresh or dried. This is a very hardy species, small flowered but with superb colour in the garden, especially nice contrasting with yellow or gold neighbours. Compact in size, this may be useful towards the border edge. Plants spread to form a small patch. Easily divided in early spring. Tolerant of hot, dry sites, and soils high in salts. For drying, pick stems just as the flower clusters open fully, and hang upside down to dry in a warm, dark place. Attractive to butterflies.

What others say about this plant...
Amethyst sea holly is especially popular with northern growers because it's extremely cold-hardy. It also succeeds better in hot-summer gardens than most other sea hollies. From midsummer to late summer, the plants produce branching stems of small metallic blue flowers with very long, pointed bracts.; Larry Hodgson, Perennials for Every Purpose
