PerennialHeritage Perennial Profile

Here's the complete description for this Heritage Perennial. Drop in any time to see the rest of our collection.

 Plant Number: 1.299.100USDA Zone: 4 - 9
Knautia macedonica
Common name :  Crimson Scabious
A seldom-encountered species, forming a bushy clump of grey-green foliage at the base. Upright stems bear loads of small crimson-red pincushion flowers throughout the summer and into autumn, one of the few red-flowering perennials to bloom for the whole season. Crimson Scabious is especially useful in warm summer regions, growing well in well-drained sunny sites and most useful in containers or tubs. Plants may be short-lived but will generally self seed each year. Combines beautifully with silver foliage. Attractive to butterflies. Flowers are occasionally soft pink.

What others say about this plant...
Pure crimson is not a common colour in border flowers; this throws up many curving stems from the basal clump, each one branching into several stalks and each has a lovely, pure dark crimson, very double, dense 'pin cushion' 2 inches across.
