Mertensia simplicissima

Beach Bluebells

USDA Zone: 3-9

Plant number: 1.364.090

Although related to our native Virginia Bluebells, this Japanese species is best suited to the sunny rock garden with a light sandy or gravelly soil. Powdery-blue succulent leaves form a low rosette, with trailing stems of pink buds that open into amazing little sky-blue bells in late spring and early summer. Plants do not become dormant during the summer. Performs best in regions with a cool summer climate. Not for average border conditions and probably best in the hands of more advanced gardeners.
