Mitchella repens
Partridge Berry |
USDA Zone: 3-9 |
Plant number: 7.369.050
Partridge Berry is mat-forming and indigenous to eastern North America. Only reaches 2 inches tall but spreads to approximately 12 inches. Leaves appear in pairs along the stem and are oval, glossy and dark green with white-ish veins. In spring, funnel-shaped, fragrant, white flowers appear that have a slight pink blush. Late summer, the flowers are followed by bright red berries which are edible but tasteless. May be seen growing in the wild in sandy soils around bogs and streams and in low moist woods. A.k.a. known as twin berry since a pair of flowers yields one berry.
