The leaves start out green in spring then turn a shimmering dark mahogany purple during the summer heat, creating a substantial clump. Long bottlebrush spikes of tan to gold flowers become shiny purple seed heads in the fall — these are terrific for cutting. Wait until the spring weather warms before planting outdoors.
