Phyteuma scheuchzeri

Horned Rampion

USDA Zone: 6-9

Plant number: 1.423.910

A close relative of the Bellflowers (but looking very un-bell-like) , this is an excellent rock garden or edging plant that is seldom seen in gardens. It forms a low evergreen mound or tuft of narrow blue-green leaves, bearing taller stems that hold spiky ball-shaped clusters of deep-blue flowers in early summer. One reference compares the bizarre flower heads to the Sputnik satellite. Prefers a rich, moist soil with good drainage. Easy to divide in spring, if desired. Possibly hardy in Zone 5 or colder, with protection or good winter snow cover.
