PerennialHeritage Perennial Profile

Here's the complete description for this Heritage Perennial. Drop in any time to see the rest of our collection.

 Plant Number: 1.015.050USDA Zone: 2 - 9
Aconitum napellus
Common name :  Blue Monkshood
An old-fashioned heirloom perennial steeped in folklore traditions, but not seen often in modern gardens. This forms an upright mound of deeply-cut green leaves, bearing tall spikes of deep-blue flowers in mid-summer. May need staking in early summer. An outstanding cut flower. Plants prefer a site that will not dry out, away from thirsty tree roots. In hot summer areas this will need protection from afternoon sun. Easily divided every 3 to 4 years, in early spring. CAUTION: toxic if eaten/harmful via skin.

What others say about this plant...
Aconites look a bit like delphiniums, but as garden performers, aconites have delphiniums beat. Not only are they pest- and disease-resistant, they bloom for as long as two months.; Larry Hodgson, Perennials for Every Purpose
