Dryopteris cycadina (a.k.a. atrata)
Plant number: 9.030.100(=D. atrata) Also known as the Black Wood Fern, this forms a medium-sized clump of light green fronds, the stems covered in tiny black scales. The appearance is stiff and leathery, with an arching habit. Plants are clumping in habit, and well suited to use in any moist, shady situation. Also useful in tubs or mixed containers, combining beautifully with other shade-loving plants, such as Hostas or Hellebores. Evergreen in mild winter regions, but the old fronds can be trimmed in spring if they look untidy. Mulch around the plants with dead leaves in the fall, to help conserve moisture in summer.
